And It begins...

Project CONSERVE
Initiated by AIESEC in Navi Mumbai

Project CONSERVE, that is the ever green initiative of AIESEC in Navi Mumbai officially begins.
We have a brilliant core heading the project, that have been working real hard to get partnerships in and to spread the word across the city to make this all happen. Because, we believe in being the change we wish to see, in this world. It's a brilliant way to understand your true potential, by trying and heading a positive social impact.

On this blog, I shall update you about our progess, about how the workshops are going and overall everything new that we come across and learn!
You shall also see more green posts, a few posts on how the NGOs function in these times and surely some on how you, my audience has reacted and been impacted.

It's very important to understand that the environmental crisis, is not one faced by a single country or nation, but by all the nations across the globe. This understanding has been shared by our international interns, that have joined us for this project. They comprise of the youth from the vibrant cultures of Brazil, Peru, Egypt and Sweden.
The only way we can measure change, is the impact it brings to us as individuals. Who we become, by what we do! Here is a sneek peak into the experiences that have personally been shared by our interns and other members alike. Go on, have a good read!

Our intern from Sweden, Philip Engman said;
"We went in to Mumbai (me, Lucas, Nihal, Pooja) to get information about recycling of consumer products like, food waste, plastics and metal products that we use everyday. The main idea that we got from the meeting was that we should reduce, reuse and recycle consumer products. Thus, first we should try to reduce our consumption and only use products that are easy to recycle. Then we should reuse the products as much as possible and the last option should be to recycle it.

I think the information that we got from the NGO was really useful and she was very passionate in what she did.

Then, we got to see how the soil is composted and we even get some soil to bring with us, which we will be using in our workshops.

In Sweden it is not so common to see the usage of compost soil, especially not in the city. In rural areas it might be more common
. But this change is truly remarkable and organic
"

These are pictures he took of the preparation of the compost soil.

On the next day he added,

"I went with Tejashri as she wanted to be call to see if we could create partnerships with some more schools in order to invite them to participate in our project. It was really hard to get an appointment with the principals because they were either busy or not there. However, we managed to meet two different principals and a lady that was running a kindergarten. The two principals seemed interested, even though, one of them thought that the workshop fee was a little high. We had a long and very interesting conversation with the lady that was running the kindergarten, she gave us some tips and ideas that can be useful for our project.

In the afternoon, we went to a plant nursery in order to learn how to create organic soil. In addition, we got some information about different plants and vegetables that they were already
planting and hosting there.

Then we went to Central Park  in Khargar, Navi Mumbai and I was amazed how big it was, a really awesome park. We plan to keep a photography workshop in the same location. As it has a lot of greenery to offer, along with an amphitheatre."

The way this goes about, is that our international interns, receive training from our partnered NGOs and they help in the sessions and workshops that our held in the Schools and housing societies! They play an important link in parting their gained information, and through it, gain knowledge too. So the circle is complete.

We had a Session by the NGO RUR and Green Souls and Envirovigil which had the presence of my fellow AIESECers and project Member, Nihal Shaikh and Shambhavi Dhir . Here are their experiences, what they learnt and what they wished to share about it,

RUR (Are You Reducing, Reusing, Recycling)
~A Session with Monisha Narke~
"We came to know that the intention of RUR is to evolve the eco consciousness of people; marked by showing concern for the environment. We understood that today's convenience causes collateral damage. There is a lot of extra packaging onto the goods that we consume.
One way to reduce this is to buy in bulk.
T the end of life of a material is very important cause that decides how, after our use, it'll rest into environment. Therefore the 3 important practices are
 1) reduce (e.g. using a pen with a metal body; that can be used effectively for a longer duration.)
2) reuse (e.g. refilling the pen&using again rather than use & throw behavior)
3) recycle (e.g. don't throw the pen out if the window but into the recycle bin.

In today's world of rapid & huge consumption the challengesfaced while thinking if the 3 Rs are;
I) consumerism & the convenience sought for consumption.
ii) lack of space.
iii) over packaging.
iv) health & hygiene
v) poor reducing reusing & recycling practices leading to global warming.
vi) exploitation of nature to such extent that tee damage done can't be restored.

Thus RUR as an organization aims;
1) to sensitize the people about thevimportance of the 3 Rs
2) to set up a system which makes it convenient to follow the 3 Rs
3) come up with a retail model which basically is about practicing the 3Rs right from the grocery store.
We learnt that multi layer packaging is difficult to recycle.
We came to know about the great garbage patch in the north Pacific gyre. This patch is characterised by exceptionally high concentration of pelagic plastics, chemical sludge & other junk that have been trapped by virtue of the currents of the North Pacific Gyre.
We were also informed that plastics can be recycled for about 7 times, metal objects & earthen pots & cups a 100 times. Hence the life span of waste is very important. We must learn to invest the waste. To start with, we could 'break down the dust bin' & segregate the waste for effective waste recycling. As an organization RUR aims to offer a solution to the society for the same.
The session also had the participation of Monisha Narke's young niece Apurva, here's a little something that she wrote about our city:

  Green Souls
~A session by Sabit Rajendran~
"The session was delivered by Sabita Rajendran, who has been associated with green souls for several months now. We were briefed about the location & that the produce goes t to the kid cancer patients. Then they told us about their funda of natural farming wherein they only utilize naturally available resources to grow all the variety of plants. They make their own soil by composting fallen leaves utilizing the method called as mulching.
We learnt that the fallen leaves should not be treated as a waste, but they can be used to enrich the soil & are extremely beneficial for the plant health. In their presence there is no need of any chemical fertilizer to get a good farm produce.
What was also understood was, that to get rid of the pests, One need not necessarily use pesticides. If one plants herbs that emit strong smells like basil among theregular food crops, it helps to keep away the pests! It's amazing how such simple techniques can be as effective as the high end techniques used conventionally these days!
Volunteers at green souls make raised beds to grow their plants. We saw worms on the beds, which they said is a sign of healthy soil. Also, we learnt how to make similar raised beds. Simply take a coconut shell, fill it with mulch & place it on the ground upside down. These act as air pockets. These are covered with a layer of mulch & alternating layers of soil & mulch till the bed is about 6 inches high. Into this bed, seeds or stalk is sowed/planted & for the next few weeks the bed is watered daily then every alternate day water is sprinkled onto the beds. Excessive watering is rather water wastage, plants just need moisture!
After learning that farming can be so simple & amazing, we all are looking forward for the next session!"

Get your 'Green' Groove on!

Project CONSERVE
Initiated by AIESEC in Navi Mumbai

One must never underestimate the value of space. Living in a flat or apartment does not mean you must sacrifice on your wish of a beautiful flower or organic garden. You can do a lot with a little, so buckle up to expand you home into the outdoors. Dedicate a space in your balcony, a slot of your time and a few innovative thoughts for your green space. Just a few tips up your sleeve and you're good to create a small exclusive organic garden for yourself!

Begin by measuring on and planning the space. The plan need not be a very extravagant one, where you go all overboard with excitement. Start small and expand as and when required.
Here are a few tips that will help you understand and design the space and a start-up guide into your green venture:

Think PERPENDICULAR:
Now when i say this, do not restrict yourself just because of the inavailability of space. A garden spread out is as good as a garden built vertically. Even the largest balconies will not be overly spacious. The trick to creating a vast and varied organic garden is to think beyond the conventional. Use pots to plant your fruit, vegetable or flower seeds and stack them up on a wooden shelf or hang them from the ceiling. Also you could use take-away plastic containers, punch in some holes and make a tray arrangement. You could cut in half 1 or 2 litre plastic bottles, create some holes for air and excess water. These bottles could also be hung with a bit of added innovation.

Do some "R & D":
Before you begin planting and growing, you will need to carry it adequate amount of research about which fruits, vegetables and flowers are in season and whether they grow in your climate. Do a quick research about soil that is appropriate for different flowers and vegetables, to have an idea what you can grow best. You can be more organised by adding a sleek label on each pot or container and mentioning the names. This could become an educational activity for your children, you could ask them to find out the scientific names like the genus and species of the plants. This should help keep them involved and surely will add to their knowledge base.
As our households are the ones that drink tonnes of tea, after you seperate your preparation and are left with the leaves, these can be added to your plants as they serve as a natural manure. Just remember to wash out any remainder of milk as it could invite ants.

Get innovative:
~Danglers right out of my Aunt's garden~
Now, I'm sure you have heard me say this before, but getting innovative doesnt mean following everything I say. It's about creating your own! Bring out your creativity, and begin with using everything that you already have present at your home. You can have fun with this, make it a hobby. Doing organic gardening is surely your own personal step and initiative at being green and different. It's very sustainable and brings immense pleasure to one pursuing it. But Im sure your the one who is going to have more than just you involved!

"Creativity is not the finding of a thing, but the making of something after it is found. And that is also Innovation."

Get organised:
Prior to making a visit to a nursery or making any purchases, you must ensure you have a space set up. You could build or have installed the shelves or danglers and decide where you are going to place your pots. Keep a corner for your gardening materials (Gloves, tills, soil and fertilizers) so that you have them handy. Set the pots in the place alotted to ensure that they fit in the space.

Organic gardening or farming is an extremely relaxing and interesting activity, so have fun and never underestimate the "flower power!".
~Go green~

Now just for that push you really required!
Project CONSERVE shall be conducting workshops on organic farming.
We have partnered with a few remarkable NGO's and we shall give you updates about that very soon. Follow us and stay updated with the green wave!

Inspired by Nature

Project CONSERVE
Initiated by AIESEC in Navi Mumbai

Creativity, you either possess it or you stumble across it! Eitherways, what creativity can do, is totally amazing because its individualistic, fresh, explorative and adventurous! It's all about not holding back. Even if you feel you lack in it, it exists. All you need is some inspiration.

I stumbled across something truly marvellous and wanted to share it with you as well, scroll below, and have a look!

The Art of Leaft Carving:

Image courtsey Illusion.scene360

Natural leaf carving is the actual manual cutting and removal of a leaf’s surface to produce an art work on  the leaf. The process of carving is performed by artists using tools to carefully remove the surface without cutting or removing the veins. The veins add detail into the subject matter of the carving. The material or most common leaf used in leaf carving is the leaf of a Chinar tree. The Chinar tree is native to India, Pakistan and China. Chinar leaves have a close resemblance to maple leaves.

Something that should be noted, The Chinar tree's leaves that are used for such purposes are the fallen leaves. Not causing any harm to the tree's ecosystem as a whole.
A memory I have from many years back, I must have been 8 or 9 then. There was an ancient Chinar tree near my house and everytime I crossed that tree i used to collect one perfect fallen leaf. These leaves have a very beautiful lattice vein work running across them. Hence, when they would completely dry out, they would resemble some very intricate and delicate off-white, net work. I used to paint them bronze/gold and save them as bookmarks.

As I look closely and observe, many have already gained true inspiration from nature. It is what surrounds us and has also been a mirror of beauty and grace. Inset are earrings made from scrap metal, inspired by the above Chinar leaves.

Nature has so much to offer to us, and we dont just accept it's humble offerings, we exploit them. It's the need of the hour that we give back all the joy and happiness we finally derive from it.

~Inspire. And be Inspired.~

Go Green

Project CONSERVE
Initiated by AIESEC in Navi Mumbai
“The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.”
                                                             ― Albert Einstein.

When one talks about going green or thinking green, what are the few things that strike your head?
Going green is surely all about change, but it's not about changing the society, it's about bringing a change at a personal level. It's about changing your thought process. Going green is about being proactive, aware and really hands on!
The question is, can you stop being lazy and change? Honestly, It seems a little difficult, but I believe you can....

Want to go green, but don’t know where to start? Well, every little bit helps, so here are the top 10 easy ways to go green ASAP. Here are a few ideas, you know them, but it's just to remind you, if you know something then why not complete the cycle and apply that knowledge!

10 Ways to Go Green Now!

1- Unplug appliances & battery chargers while not in use.(I did unplug mine)
2- Use compact fluorescent light bulbs.
3- Ride a bike or take public transportation, if you must drive think about car pooling! Get those walking shoes out! Walk that mile, save some fuel.
Did you know the Top Five Bike-Friendly Cities?
Portland, Oregon
Davis, California
Tucson, Arizona
Madison, Wisconsin
Boulder, Colorado
4- Use reusable shopping bags at the grocery stores, like jute or cloth bags. Say no to plastics, Jute is way fab!

5- Apply for electronic bills! Save paper!
6- Conserve water by turning off that tap while you  brush your teeth.(Keep this in mind)
7- Use natural cleaning products.
8- Stop using disposable stuff like diapers, napkins, plates, cups, razors, etc.
9- Recycle things like glass, plastics, newspapers, etc.
10- Eat organic, local or fair trade foods (Learn more about organic food and urban farming as we are holding workshops very soon!).
Now I Couldn't just stop at 10...
In Addition to these, my fellow entrepreuners and innovators, think about utilising Renewable Energy aka Green Energy! Go solar!
Be aware of your Carbon Footprint! Carbon footprint is the total set of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by an organization, event, product or person.
Here's a Carbon Footprint calculator...go find out yours NOW!

Give thought to a very interesting concept of Green conventions or green meetingsThey are conventions which are conducted in ways which minimize the environmental burdens imposed by activities. Green event planners apply environmentally preferred practices to waste management, resource and energy use, travel and local transportation, facilities selection, siting and construction, food provision and disposal, hotels and accommodations, and management and purchasing decisions. The practice is knows as "event greening" or "sustainable event management".
....
Three R's that will surely get you far in your new GREEN GOAL,

 Reuse, Reduce and Recycle.

Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.”

Why is the Earth so..Habitable?

Project CONSERVE
Initiated by AIESEC in Navi Mumbai.

Our planet Earth, as we all know it, is one of the 8 planets of our solar system. To illustrate a stronger picture for you, WE are just a small spec, in the vast galaxy of which our solar system is a part of.
Just A small spec, I say? This very spec, is a complex and intricate system of it's own. And in this complexity and intricity of it lies true beauty!
Welcome to your planet,
Welcome to Earth.

The Earth is  the densest  and fifth-largest, of the eight planets. It is also the largest of the Solar System's four terrestrial planets. It is referred to as the world, the Blue Planet, or by its Latin name, Terra.
Earth formed approx. 4.54 billion yrs ago, and life first appeared on its surface within one billion years.  Earth's biosphere then significantly altered the atmospheric and other  physical conditions, which helped the growth of organisims as well as the formation of the ozone layer, which together with Earth's magnetic field blocked harmful solar radiation, and allowed the formerly Aqua-confined life to move safely to land. The physical properties, as well as its geological history and orbit, have allowed life to persist. Estimates on how much longer the planet will to be able to continue to support life range from 500 million years, to as long as 2.3 billion years.
How did scientists and astronomers derive such figures??
This estimation is created on the basis of two very interesting terms, the Earth's carrying capacity and it's biotic potential.

The carrying capacity:
The carrying capacity of a biological species in an environment is the maximum population size of the species that the environment can sustain, given the food, habitat, water and other necessities are available in the environment. In population biology, carrying capacity is defined as the environment's maximal load. And for humans, thats falls to a median of about 10 billion!

The Biotic potential:
Biotic Potential is the maximum reproductive capacity of a population if resources are unlimited.
It is possible to have the population be more than the carry capacity, but it will damage the environment. When that happens, the carrying capacity will decrease, and the population will crash.
Two components of the biotic potential have been identified:
  • Nutritive potential - the ability to acquire and utilize food for growth and energy
  • Protective potential - potential ability of the organism to protect itself against the dynamic forces of the environment.
These two terms are important to be understood, as they give an idea as to how the dynamics of Earth and life on it work.
A planet that can sustain life is termed habitable, even if life did not originate there.
The Earth provides liquid water—an environment where complex organic molecules can assemble and interact, and have sufficient energy to sustain metabolism. The distance of the Earth from the Sun, as well as its orbital eccentricity, rate of rotation, axial tilt, geological history, sustaining atmosphere and protective magnetic field all contribute to the current climatic conditions at the planets face. In more simple terms, this crazy balance, is the only reason you and I are sitting here, breathing and reading about this! This is what makes the Earth so livable! Now  can you just imagine what would happen, if there were a shift in this balance......

All shades of green! Project CONSERVE

Project CONSERVE,

Who are we?
We are an initiation by AIESEC in Navi Mumbai.

What are we aiming at?
Project Conserve is a Go Green! Initation. It's a project that is truly a 'need-of-the-hour' undertaking and we would like you to stay on board with us, through this journey towards a better tomorrow!

As a chinese proverb once said,"If you plan for one year, plant rice, if you plan for 10 years, plant trees and if you plan for 100 years, educate the people."

This is a truly a thought generating proverb! Which leaves you with a different angle all together.
Now, Im not saying that the people aren't educated, what I'm questioning is the application of this knowledge.

As Project CONSERVE begins, I want you to experience all the shades of the new pink! i.e. GREEN!
We wish to plant the seeds of growth and sustainability that will surely ensure a better tomorrow.
Stay close by, as you travel with us, through this journey in finding a truly brilliant and promising tomorrow!
